Does an ice-cold drink actually taste better than the same beverage at room temperature? Depends on what its taste is: a new study finds that the intensity of some flavors varies with temperature. The work is in the journal Chemosensory Perception. [Martha R. Bajec, Gary J. Pickering and Nancy DeCourville, Influence of Stimulus Temperature on Orosensory Perception and Variation with Taste Phenotype]

Researchers took solutions that tasted bitter, sour, sweet, or astringent?a flavor found in legumes and raw produce that creates a dry, puckering feel in the mouth. They either chilled the solutions to 5 degrees Celsius, the recommended temperature for keeping food cool?or heated the solutions to 35 degrees Celsius, a couple degrees below human body temperature. Volunteers then rated the tastes.

Both sour and astringent solutions tasted stronger at warm temperatures, and the intensity lasted longer than it did with chilled drinks. Bitter flavors came through best when chilled. And temperature had no effect on perception of sweetness.

For most people, temperature can enhance flavors. But for some, dubbed thermal tasters, temperature alone can be a flavor. Heating or cooling parts of the tongue creates the sensation of taste without food?a finding that?s hard to swallow.

Ian Somerhalder Says ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Role Would Be ‘Amazing’

‘I officially have a lot of experience seducing younger women,’ ‘Vampire Diaries’ star tells MTV News.

Now that “The Vampire Diaries” has wrapped its third season, Ian Somerhalder will now have some time to fill, and if fans of “Fifty Shades of Grey” have their way, he’ll step into the role of Christian Grey.

For weeks, fans have been voicing their opinions on who should play the billionaire tycoon in the film adaptation of the hit erotic trilogy penned by E L James. Robert Pattinson‘s name has been in the mix, as well as Ryan Gosling, but it seems that most vans are gravitating toward the “Vampire Diaries” star to take on this dark and dynamic character.

MTV News caught up with Somerhalder at the CW Upfronts in New York City on Thursday (May 17) and he revealed that playing the role of Damon in the “Vampire Diaries” has been perfect training to get him ready to portray Christian Grey.

“I think it would be an amazing thing,” Somerhalder said of the possibility of getting the role. “One interesting thing is, by the virtue of playing Damon for now a few years, [he's] 170 plus years old, in love with an 18 year old, I officially have a lot of experience seducing younger women. I’m not saying, I’m just saying.”

“Fifty Shades of Grey” revolves around Christian Grey’s relationship with young college graduate Anastasia Steele as the two develop not only a strong emotional relationship, but a much-talked-about sexual relationship. The scenes are so hot that at times it has left readers, and even Somerhalder a little flushed.

“A little bit, yeah, there’s blushing,” Somerhalder said of some of the S&M scenes.

We are sure fans would agree that Somerhalder could easily pull it off, but his support isn’t just coming from the “Fifty Shades” fans, it is also coming from his “Vampire Diaries” co-stars.

“I know he’s campaigning, I love it,” Candice Accola said of Somerhalder expressing his interest for the role. “I mean, the whole thing is like Adonis, sexy and he fits that bill pretty well.”

Kat Graham agrees, “Ian’s an amazing actor, he’s extremely dedicated to his craft and he’s also very good to the fans,” Graham told MTV News at the annual Wango Tango concert. “They’d be lucky to have him.”

Do you think Ian Somerhalder would make the perfect Christian Grey? Let us know in the comments.

Some 63 percent of Americans would be in favor of taking military action to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, according to a new survey.

The Pew Research Center asked 26,210 people in 21 different countries to give their views on Iran?s alleged plans to get nuclear weapons, finding widespread opposition to the idea in the West and also in some countries in the Mideast.

More than nine in 10 people in the United States, U.K., France and Germany were against Iran getting nuclear weapons. Two percent of Americans said they were in favor.

About 61 percent of Democrats and 79 percent of Republicans backed military force to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons, with 31 percent of Democrats and 15 percent of Republicans saying this should be accepted if it happens.

The survey found that 76 percent of Jordanians, 66 percent of Egyptians and 62 percent of Lebanese people were also against the prospect of a nuclear-armed Iran.

Iran insists its nuclear program is purely for peaceful purposes, and says it has no intention of making weapons.

?In most countries, there is majority support among opponents of a nuclear-armed Iran for international economic sanctions to try to stop Tehran?s weapons program,? the Pew report laying out the findings, ?A Global ?No? to a Nuclear-Armed Iran,?? reads.

The New Yorker’s Laura Secor traveled to Iran in March for the country’s parliamentary elections, and she joins Morning Joe to discuss an election that occurred with Iran’s nuclear ambitions as the backdrop.

?The Chinese and the Russians are notable dissenters in this regard. The poll also found majorities in Western Europe and the United States disposed to taking military action to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran. Again, the Russians and Chinese disagreed,? it added.

At schools, in shops, and on the streets of big cities and small towns, daily life plays out in Iran.

Some 77 percent of Russians were against a nuclear-armed Iran, but of those only 46 percent backed tougher sanctions and just 24 percent approved of military action. In China, 54 percent were opposed, and of those 38 percent backed more sanctions and 30 percent would support the use of force.

Roughly half of Washington?s European allies would support military action to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran, the survey found.

AUTO INSURANCE: Full Coverage Auto Insurance Quotes

Auto insurance is a compliance and a basic necessity that has been imposed by most of the States. Many of the states also impose the level of coverage, depending on the driving record and age of the driver. For example, people who have a record of driving under the influence of alcohol and substances need to have a DUI auto insurance policy. Two other coverage that are mandatory include, collision insurance and no fault insurance.

A full coverage auto insurance on other hand is an insurance policy that provides a comprehensive coverage to the driver as well as the car. The specialty of such a car insurance is that the insured person does not have to shoulder much financial risk in case of an accident. In the following paragraphs, the requisite contents of a full coverage car insurance, provided by almost all auto insurance companies, have been discussed. Take a look.

Full Coverage Auto Insurance Quotes

Before you start off, take a look at the contents of the insurance policy and what kind of coverage should such a policy provide for. These are the must-haves of an auto insurance that provides full coverage

??? Every full coverage auto or car insurance policy must cover the collision insurance. A collusion insurance is basically an insurance coverage where physical damage to the car and its cost of repair are included. There are however some components such as the non-metallic components that are not covered by the policy.
??? Medical insurance coverage for first aid is also an important necessity for many full coverage auto insurance policies. A car accident can result into a situation where instant first aid is required. A full coverage policy always covers up this expenditure.
??? During a car accident, there is a possibility of other, non-auto property getting damaged. In such a case, the car insurance quotes often provide for a coverage against the damage to this property.
??? Often there is a possibility that the other parties involved in the accident would sue the insured person. In such cases, lawyer fees and cost of compensation if any, would be reimbursed by the insurance company.

How does a Full Coverage Auto Insurance Policy Work?

The working of a full coverage auto insurance policy is no different from the ordinary insurance policies for automobiles and cars. The only difference is that the coverage of an auto insurance policy that has a full coverage has a wider coverage.

There are some important aspects that the insurance brokers and agents take into consideration while providing the policy and quoting the premium. These aspects include:

??? Age of the driver and the car. The rule of thumb is, older the driver the lesser the premium and older the car, more is the premium.
??? The speed and CC of the car do matter, as faster cars get into more number of accidents, which are damaging. Apart from that, safety features are also thoroughly considered. Thus faster and ill-equipped cars have higher premium policies.
??? Driving lessons, charitable work and good grades, often get lesser premiums.

Separate species, shared genomes

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

A landmark effort to sequence the genome of a South American butterfly has revealed the key behind its unusual ability to mimic other butterflies.

A first for science, the genome sequencing work is the product of an international group of researchers, dubbed the Heliconius Genome Consortium, who examined the genome of the Postman butterfly (Heliconius melpomene), a well-known species that lives in the Peruvian Amazon. Using that data as a guide, they then examined the genetic make-up of two other closely-related butterfly species ? Heliconius timareta and Heliconius elevatus.

All three species were selected for the study because they each share similar color patterns on their wings as a way to ward off predators.

The Consortium?s surprising finding, as described in a paper published May 16 in Nature, is that the various species all look similar because they share the parts of their DNA that deal with color patterns.

?Heliconius butterflies, exhibit an extraordinary amount of color-pattern mimicry between the species, and with species in other groups,? Mallet said. ?We have found that species share the parts of the genome that code for color pattern loci, with a major impact on the survival of these butterflies in the wild.?

The genetic sharing between species, researchers believe, is the result of hybridization. Considered extremely rare, particularly in animals, hybridization occurs when insects of two different species interbreed in the wild.

The resulting hybrid offspring share traits with both mother and father. Though often considered evolutionary dead-end, hybrids occasionally interbreed with a parent species, in the process introducing new genes that can help populations adapt to new or changing environments.

?What we show is that one butterfly species can gain its protective colour pattern genes ready-made from a different species by hybridizing (or interbreeding) with it ? a much faster process than having to evolve one’s colour patterns from scratch,? said Kanchon Dasmahapatra, a postdoctoral researcher at the University College of London?s Department of Genetics, Evolution, and Environment, and a co-author of the paper.

?This project really changes how we think about adaptation in general,? said Marcus Kronforst, a Bauer Fellow at Harvard, who participated in the sequencing. ?Evolutionary biologists often wonder whether different species use the same genes to generate similar traits, like the mimetic wing patterns of Heliconius butterflies. This study shows us that sometimes different species not only use the same genes, but the exact same stretches of DNA, which they pass around by hybridization.?

A total of 80 researchers in 32 research universities and institutions from eight countries worked on this genome project, while a subset of nine laboratories funded the sequencing of the 290 million DNA bases using new high-throughput technologies, allowing the work to proceed without major dedicated grant funding.

The nine laboratories that funded the sequencing work of the HeliconiusGenome Consortium include:

  • University College London, UK, and Harvard University, USA: James Mallet
  • University of Exeter, UK: Richard French-Constant
  • Harvard University, USA: Marcus Kronforst
  • Mus?um National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris, France: Mathieu Joron
  • Boston University, USA: Sean Mullen
  • University of California at Irvine, USA: Robert Reed, Adriana Briscoe
  • University of Edinburgh, UK: Mark Blaxter
  • Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Panama: W. Owen McMillan
  • Cambridge University, UK: Chris Jiggins

Sequencing work for the Consortium was carried out at the Baylor College of Medicine, who performed the main reference sequence, and at the University of Edinburgh, GenePool, where the resequencing was performed.

Focus on joint health this May | Herbal Groups

Posted on 15 May 2012 by admin

?

May is National Arthritis Awareness Month, a time when you should keep the health of your joints in mind. In honor of the month, the Post Bulletin recently published an article by Wes Emmert, sports and athletic performance manager for the Olmsted Medical Center in Minnesota about managing arthritis.

The National Center for Biotechnology Information states that almost everyone gets symptoms of osteoarthritis by the age of 70. This is why many people take herbal joint supplements to potentially help keep their joints healthy.

Emmert quoted certified group fitness instructor Sarah Cima about the importance of exercise when you have arthritis.

“One of the best ways to manage arthritis is incorporating physical activity into your daily routine. This may sound ironic, but it really does help. The key is to find the appropriate physical activity,” said Cima, quoted by the news source.

Emmert recommended water-based physical activity as a good way to get cardiovascular exercise without putting too much pressure on the joints. The Mayo Clinic suggests that individuals with arthritis also do some light weight-lifting to promote muscle strength. If you have arthritis, ask your doctor about starting an exercise routine and consider taking an herbal joint supplement.

Fischer wins Neb. GOP Senate primary

State Sen. Deb Fischer upended the Nebraska Senate GOP primary on Tuesday, coming from behind to win the nomination over perceived front-runner Attorney General Jon Bruning, who had been leading in the polls by double digits just weeks ago.

Fischer will face former governor and Democratic Sen. Bob Kerrey this November in an open race for the seat currently held by retiring Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson. Fischer enters the general election with an edge over Kerrey because of the conservative lean of the Cornhusker State. National Democrats see Kerrey as their best chance to keep the state in Democratic hands, while Republicans view it as a must-win in their efforts to win a Senate majority. Democrats currently control the chamber 53-47.

Treasurer Don Stenberg fell short in what was essentially a three-way nomination contest, delivering an electoral blow to the cadre of conservative activists that had endorsed him, including Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., the anti-tax group Club for Growth, and the Tea Party-aligned Freedom Works. Collectively those groups spent over $2.5 million in this race.

All three candidates scored competing endorsements from Republican Party leaders, injecting a last minute flurry of national attention and outside money in to the race. Fischer was endorsed late by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and former presidential candidate Herman Cain, while Bruning was back by former presidential candidate Rick Santorum and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

She also benefitted from an injection of $200,000 in negative ads attacking Bruning from a Super PAC funded by Joe Ricketts, whose family owns the Chicago Cubs.

Bruning was the early favorite in the race but faced a constant stream of criticism about his wealth and business ties. “I think I’ve been attacked more than any candidate in a long time, and it’s a function of a political system that is based very much on attack politics,” Bruning said, according to the Associated Press.

Elements of a Good Home Security System

?

When you decide that you want to invest in a security system for your home, it makes sense to choose one that?s going to provide you with the best possible quality for what you can afford. ?Home security is no trivial matter, and if you really want to protect your family, your possessions and your house, it makes sense to seek out a system that has all of the features you want. ?Make sure that you pay attention and watch out for the elements of a good home security system when you first start looking. ?This way, you will avoid paying too much and you?ll get all of the features that will keep your home safe. ?

?

Two way voice communication and wireless window and door contact are two elements you should look for in a good security system. ?These kinds of features help with your peace of mind because you know that any kind of attempt to break in while you sleep or while you?re away will be properly addressed. ?An interior siren is another beneficial element that can go a long way to scaring off an intruder if someone does manage to get inside. ?When you know that your home is monitored around the clock, you will be able to live your life without having to worry about security. ?

?

A wireless motion detector is another feature that can catch any would-be intruders off guard, and activate the security system. ?Of course, you?ll also want a key pad or some other form of control panel where you can set the system and run it on your end. ?A good security company will provide the tools and the instructions on how to use them, so you can be a veritable expert on the system, too. ?The instruction element is quite important, because you don?t want to trigger too many false alarms when you come home or are trying to set it up. ?

?

The ability to meet your budget is also an important element for any security system. ?Some companies charge quite a lot for installation and monthly monitoring of the system. ?If possible, try to find a company who doesn?t charge at all for installation, and who has a lower monitoring cost than the competitors. ?A strong warranty on the equipment is a big benefit, as are extras like more door or window contacts as part of the package. ?Take the time to work out a budget ahead of time and ask questions to make sure the costs fit within it. ?

?

Aside from the security system itself, it?s also a good idea to sign on with a company that has a good deal of experience and a proven track record of success. ?Ask around your neighborhood or look on the company website for testimonials from customers. ?At the end of the day, you want to feel safe and secure and you don?t want to pay a fortune every month to achieve this. ?Pay attention and ask the right questions and you?ll be sure to find a system that works great for you and your family. ?
